I’ve always loved Valentine’s Day – it's so fun to have an excuse to celebrate the people that you love!
Valentine’s Day has a special place in my heart because my husband and I went on our first date on February 14th. It was such a fun, casual date; who could have imagined that we were on the path to marriage, kids and everything beyond!
Now that I have two kiddos with that guy, we tend to spoil them more than each other with lots of treats and little gifts. We try to focus on the experience and showing them that we love them rather than emphasizing the actual presents.
I started making these DIY paper heart backdrops two years ago. It was the first time I had ever decorated for Valentine’s Day and I didn’t want to spend very much money.
This simple DIY is easy and inexpensive, yet makes a huge (and fun!) impact. You can throw them up anywhere and make as many or as few as you like. All you will need is a pack of card stock (I like the mixed pink pack) scissors, a hole punch, and a ball of yarn.
I start by drawing a simple heart and cutting it out. Once I have the perfect heart, I use it as a stencil to trace on to other pieces of card stock.
Time for cutting!
If you have a Cricut Cutting Machine, you could certainly use it; however it didn’t take me long to hand cut these out by hand. Next, punch a hole in the top and bottom of each heart and lay them out on your countertop in a row in the order you want to string them. Now “sew” the yarn through the holes from the top heart all the way to the bottom heart. Add a little piece of tape to the top and bottom hearts so they stay in place; the texture of the yarn will hold the rest in place so you won’t need to tape any of the others. You can adjust the spacing once you have them hung up.
